Penaeid shrimp are one of the most economically important aquaculture species in Thailand. Viral diseases especially caused by Yellow head virus (YHV) and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) can cause shrimp mortality within 3-10 days. To date, effective methods and strategies to control the diseases have been extensively studied including using RNA interference technology. However, no effective methods can be employed successfully in the farm shrimp. This is possibly due to lacking knowledge of the mechanism of the RNAi pathway, the molecular pathogenesis of viral infection and viral-host interaction. Therefore, our research interest is focused on understanding of the RNAi machineries in shrimp and their regulation during viral infection. How the viral encoded miRNAs function during viral infection and the mechanism of YHV entry and trafficking inside shrimp cells are currently investigated.
