Field of Research: Stem Cells, Cell and Gene Therapy

Our major goal is to promote the development of innovative discoveries and translational strategies related to stem cells. We are interested in understanding the mechanisms of blood and neural development, modeling blood and neural disorders, and direct converting of adult fibroblast into other specific lineage.

Currently, we are developing integration-free induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells from both animal and human sources, either healthy or patients with known genetic diseases. The cells will be expanded in culture, used for basic science studies, genetically modified with state-of-the-art genome editing technology, differentiate into specific lineages, and further used for either transplantation in animal models of diseases or for drug/chemical compound screening.

We also aim to create a highly innovative international collaboration. One of our ongoing projects (STEMMAD) has been supported by the European Union under the scope of FP7-PEOPLE-2012-IAPP, to work together with 2 R&D SMEs and other 2 prestigious academic institutes in Europe.
