Academic Programs

Q1: What graduate programs are offered by the Institute of Molecular Biosciences (MB)?

A1: The Institute offers two international graduate programs:

  • Molecular and Integrative Biosciences (MBMB)
  • Neuroscience (MBNS)

Both programs offer Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.

Q2: How do I apply and when is the application period?

A2: Applications must be submitted online through the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS/MUGR), Mahidol University: https://graduate.mahidol.ac.th/admission-apply

Application Timeline:

  • Semester 1 (August intake): Applications are typically open in four rounds from October to May
  • Semester 2 (January intake): Applications are mainly open for Ph.D. programs from July to September

Q3: What are the highlights of the MBMB & MBNS program?

A3.1: The MBMB Graduate Program offers a transformative educational experience that prioritizes the holistic development of professional researchers through a student-centered approach. Beyond core knowledge and practical expertise, the curriculum integrates brand-new courses in apprentice teaching and career development to cultivate essential transferable skills and adaptability across diverse work contexts. Students can tailor their training through more than 30 intensive workshop-style elective courses, designed to build a solid foundation for upcoming thesis projects in a flexible, high-impact format. To ensure academic success, the “Research Design in MBMB” course provides a robust mentoring system, allowing students to collaborate closely with their advisory committees to refine their proposals before examination. Recognizing the needs of modern learners, the program moves beyond traditional written exams, utilizing authentic assessments—such as group assignments, presentations, and reflections—that mirror the challenges of a professional career. Supported by over 20 faculty members with expertise spanning basic and applied biological, biomedical, and biotechnological sciences, the program provides a comprehensive and supportive environment for graduate growth. A3.2: The MBNS Graduate Program offers a comprehensive curriculum dedicated to unraveling the complexities of the brain and nervous system. This international program is uniquely designed to bridge the gap between discovery and application, integrating fundamental basic research with vital clinical insights in fields such as cognitive neuroscience and neurodegeneration. Students engage in high-impact research using a comprehensive suite of advanced technical methodologies spanning molecular, cellular, systems, and computational neuroscience. These include molecular and cellular techniques, animal models, EEG/ERP, electrophysiology, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), computer-aided drug design, biosensor technologies, brain–computer interfaces (BCI), and high-resolution imaging approaches to investigate the intricacies of brain function and the underlying mechanisms of neurological disorders.

Delivered under an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework, the program is committed to developing well-rounded graduates with strong research and communication skills. Flexible pathways for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students support a collaborative, multidisciplinary learning environment, emphasizing the application of neuroscience knowledge to real-world challenges. Graduates are well prepared for careers in academia, healthcare-related fields, and the growing neuro-biotechnology industry, driving innovation in global brain health.

Q4: What is the study duration for each program?

A4:

Molecular and Integrative Biosciences (MBMB):

  • M.Sc.: 2 years (coursework and thesis)
  • Ph.D.:
    • Plan 2.1 (Master’s degree holders): 3 years
    • Plan 2.2 (Bachelor’s degree holders): 4 years

Neuroscience (MBNS):

  • M.Sc.: 2 years (coursework and thesis)
  • Ph.D.:
    • Plan 2.1 (Master’s degree holders): 3 years
    • Plan 2.2 (Bachelor’s degree holders): 4 years

Q5: What are the tuition fees?

A5: Mahidol University uses a flat-rate fee per semester.

MBMB Program:

  • M.Sc.: 30,000 THB (Thai) / 40,000 THB (International) | Research Fee: 150,000 THB (The research fee is exempted for students without scholarships)
  • Ph.D.: 40,000 THB (Thai) / 50,000 THB (International) | Research Fee: 300,000 THB (The research fee is exempted for students without scholarships)

MBNS Program:

  • M.Sc.: 50,000 THB (Thai) / 60,000 THB (International) | Research Fee: 250,000 THB ( Students without scholarship support may be eligible for a reduction in the research fee, subject to the consideration of the program committee. )
  • Ph.D.: 60,000 THB (Thai) / 70,000 THB (International) | Research Fee: 300,000 THB ( Students without scholarship support may be eligible for a reduction in the research fee, subject to the consideration of the program committee. )

Q6: Are scholarships available?

A6: While the Institute does not offer direct in-house scholarships, students can apply for scholarships from Mahidol University Faculty of Graduate Studies (e.g., Mahidol Postgraduate Scholarships). Eligibility criteria and conditions vary depending on the program.

For students without a scholarship, the programs may offer research fee discounts or waivers to help reduce overall costs.

Q7: Can I take courses before enrolling in the full program?

A7: Yes. Through the Mahidol Apprenticeship Program (MAP-C), you can enroll as a non-degree student, earn credits, and receive certificates for specific courses. These earned credits can later be transferred to our full M.Sc. or Ph.D. programs, provided they meet the program’s conditions.

Enrolling in MAP-C courses is an excellent way to test the waters. It allows you to experience the academic rigor and the intensive workshop format of our curriculum firsthand. This “trial period” helps you determine if you can effectively manage the workload and balance the requirements before committing to the program as a full-time student, ensuring a more confident and prepared transition into your graduate studies.
